JV Flag Football Splits with Smiths Station and John Carroll

    The Lady Rebel Junior Varsity team hosted Smiths Station and John Carroll Thursday night. The Rebels took away a win and a loss on the evening.
    It was a back and forth scoring night for Vestavia and Smiths Station. The game was within one touchdown until the final minutes of the game when Smiths Station pulled away.
    Offensively, sophomore quarterback Chloe Leahy had 48 pass attempts and completed 26 of those attempts, with one interception. Unfortunately, several of her passes were dropped throughout the game. Leahy also scored a touchdown for the rebels, as did sophomore Caroline Nintzel. Nintzel also had eight receptions for the evening, and scored an extra point. Junior Lil Sapp scored a touchdown as well and had five receptions. Freshman Alexis Rubin caught three passes from Leahy, and junior Addison Armstrong had two receptions. The Lady Rebels lost to Smiths Station 24-19.
    Defensively it was a tough night of flag pulling for the Rebels. There were some positive plays throughout the game, however. Senior Riley Newsome had two sacks and an interception. Freshman Emma Harper also had two sacks as did senior Maddie Hunsberger.
    Next up for the Rebels was the John Carroll Cavaliers. The Rebels apparently did not like losing because they came out on fire scoring on their first and almost every possession. The quarterback position was shared by junior Lil Sapp and senior Riley Newsome. Sapp had 12 pass attempts and completed 9 of those attempts. Sapp also had some very impressive rushes, one of which was for 25 yards. The Cavaliers couldn't keep up with her scrambling abilities. Sapp also scored two extra points on the evening.
    Newsome had 8 pass attempts, completing 5 of those passes. Newsome showed off her strong arm hitting receivers with 15-20 yard passes. Newsome scored a touchdown as well as an extra point. Also getting in on the touchdown action was sophomore Caroline Nintzel who also scored an extra point and had 4 receptions on the night. Junior Holland Abernathy scored a touchdown with a beautiful pick six. Abernathy also had 2 more interceptions for the Rebels. Freshmen Ella Green also scored on a pick six.
    Freshmen Alexis Rubin had an ESPN top ten catch as she pulled one in from Newsome, kept her feet under her, and rumbled into the end zone. Rubin scored twice for the Rebels. Nintzel, Newsome, and Hunsberger all scored extra points respectively in the nightcap against John Carroll.
    Interceptions were also made by freshman Ella Green, sophomore Chloe Leahy, senior Elizabeth Ann Cooper, and junior Lil Sapp. The Rebels also saw strong defensive play by senior Scarlett Padgett with some great pass deflections and flag pulls. Emily Owen had a sack and Emma Harper had 2 sacks on the night.
    Next up for the Varsity Lady Rebels is Hewitt-Trussville and Spain Park. The Rebels will be hosting these games Tuesday, October 3^rd, starting at 5:00pm. Come out and support these young ladies as they strive to make their way into the playoffs and a championship.
