The Lady Rebels flag football team took on the Gadsden City Titans and crosstown rivals, the Homewood Patriots on a beautiful Tuesday evening.
As seems to be the pattern with this team, defense was yet again on fire. The Rebels shut out Gadsden City 19-0 with strong defensive play by the entire defense. Seniors Christiana Belcher and Riley Newsome had a pass deflection each and Belcher also had an interception in the game. Strong flag pulls were a team effort as Newsome had a sack as did senior Holland Warren.
Sophomore quarterback Julia Rose went 22/34 and threw one interception. Freshman Callie Davis helped move the football down the field with five receptions and one touchdown. Senior Christiana Belcher scored a touchdown as did junior Layne Turner. Turner also scored an extra point.
The Rebels faced the Homewood Patriots in the nightcap matchup. Again, strong defensive play was a total team effort and the offense lit up the scoreboard with a 37-0 victory.
Senior Holland Warren had a sack as did sophomore Amelia Davis. Junior Emily Spooner was a rushing beast with two sacks for a total loss of 7 yards. Sophomore Chloe Leahy had an interception and junior Holland Abernathy had a pass deflection. Warren also placed the Patriots deep in their own territory several times with her long end over end punts. Sophomore Molly Mac Sharp almost broke a punt reception for a touchdown, as she motored 25 yards down the field.
It was a busy night for the Rebels offense. Sophomore quarterback Julia Rose went 26/34 with six touchdown passes. Freshman Callie Davis saw lots of action with 5 receptions on the evening and scored one touchdown. Sophomore Chloe Leahy had five receptions as well. Sophomore Caroline Nintzel contributed to the offensive cause with four receptions. Junior Layne Turner had four receptions with a touchdown and extra point scored. Senior Christiana Belcher brought her solid hands to the game as she scored four touchdowns on the evening, the last of which she high pointed the ball with three defenders draped on her. Belcher brought the ball down in the end zone as she fell to the ground.
The Lady Rebels are undefeated on the season thus far and will host Smith's Station and John Carroll Thursday, September 28th.
