On a frigid Wednesday evening, the Lady Rebels flag football team hosted the
Hoover Bucs and Spain Park Jags for the Area 9/10 Tournament. With a one and
done format, the Rebels came to play with a winning mindset, regardless of how
far the mercury dipped.
In the game versus Hoover, sophomore quarterback Julia Rose threw 20/29
and led the Rebels to a 27-6 victory. Senior Christiana Belcher had 6 receptions
from Rose and scored 3 touchdowns! Junior Layne Turner had 4 receptions and 1
touchdown. Sophomore Chloe Leahy scored 2 extra points and senior River Riley
scored an extra point as well. Riley also threw a touchdown pass. Also
contributing to the offensive prowess was freshman Callie Davis with 5
receptions.
The defense held the Bucs to a scoreless night. The only points came from
an ill-advised lateral from the Rebels. Leading the defense was senior River Riley
with 3 sacks. Senior Riley Newsome had 6 flag pulls and senior Holland Warren
had 5 flag pulls. Senior Lindsay Green had an interception for the Rebels and a
deflection as well. Also, with pass deflections for the Rebels defense was Senior
Ella Stephens, and senior Emily Cooper. Harassing the Bucs quarterback all
evening was rushers senior River Riley and junior Emily Spooner.
Spain Park defeated Oak Mountain in the next game and in the nightcap,
Vestavia played Spain Park.
Again, the defense was a powerful force shutting out the Jags offense.
Senior Christiana Belcher had a pick 6, senior Lindsay Green had an interception,
as did senior Ella Stephens. Senior River Riley had 1 sack and 3 flag pulls. Also
contributing to the defensive stand was senior Holland Warren with 5 pulls, senior
Riley Newsome with 2 pulls, senior Ella Stephens with 2 pulls, and Belcher with 3
pulls.
The offense was once again led by sophomore quarterback Julia Rose who
threw 16/26 on the evening. Those with receptions for the Rebels were senior
Christiana Belcher with 4, freshman Callie Davis also with 4, sophomore Chloe
Leahy with 3, and junior Layne Turner with 3 as well. Scoring for the Rebels was
Belcher with her pick 6, and Leahy with 2 touchdowns. Rose had a big rushing
night with 6 carries for 45 yards.
Next up for the Rebels is Homewood next week in the quarter finals. Day
and time are TBA.
