Steven Johnson

Coach Johnson is entering his eighth year coaching boys' soccer at Vestavia Hills. After three years as Varsity Assistant Coach—helping the Rebels reach the 7A semifinal in 2018 and the 7A final in 2019. He served as JV Head Coach in 2020 and is entering his fourth year as the Freshman Head Coach.  He is passionate about developing young players, building character, and cultivating a love for the game in every athlete he coaches.

He holds United Soccer Coaches diplomas in attacking play, defensive play, goalkeeping, small-sided games, and 11v11 play. Coach Johnson’s soccer journey began at Homewood High School, where he was a varsity team member from 1982 to 1986, and continued playing while serving in the Army, representing his base in matches against international soldiers.


Over the years, he has volunteered with Vestavia Hills Soccer Club, Hoover Soccer Club, and Homewood Soccer Club—where he is currently coaching academy teams. His wife Kimberly is a former history teacher and currently serving as a librarian at Vestavia Hills High School, and they have been married for 14 years.  


Steven is a graduate of UAB and Montevallo, and he currently teaches AP Macroeconomics and AP Microeconomics.  He’s also the sponsor of the Economics Club and Economics Team.
